Best Takeout/Picnic Food Between Austin and New Braunfels
Hi all-
My boyfriend and I, both NYC-based food freaks, will be headed to Texas in less than a week. We're spending a few days in Austin, and while we're there, driving out to the New Braunfels location of the Schlitterbahn waterpark (yes, I know we're both mentally 10 years old). I've been obsessively combing the boards and compiling lists for our mini-vacation, but I couldn't find the answer to one specific question:
-I shudder at the thought of wasting a meal on waterpark fare, and the Schlitterbahn lets you bring picnic food for lunch. Can anyone think of any super-delicious, hardy food we can pick up in Austin, or anywhere on the way to New Braunfels? Something that will be okay with a lack of refrigeration for a few hours. We're stopping for dinner in Lockhart on the way home, so bbq is out. Otherwise, we're both freaks for Mexican (or any other Latin), Southeast Asian, and home-cooking-type stuff. My boyfriend's a Houston native, but he's not so familiar with that area... Thanks!

You'll probably find better picnic food in Austin, BUT, once you arrive in NB, you can satisfy your post-picnic sweet tooth with a trip to Naegelin's Bakery. It's just off the square in town, and makes some of the best pastries (especially the apple streudel) around. If you're a jerky fan, you might want to try Granzin Meat Market, too. Give 'em a Google...cheers!
