I have a friend in town for just one weekday morning. We are in the Loop, but are willing to head to the Mag Mile since he has an appointment there. Any suggestions for a reasonable price??

Is Lou Mitchell's in the Loop?

I've only been there once (about 6 years ago), but I vaguely remember it being very central. The food was OK, but not all that I had hoped it would be.

Lou MItchell' is technically outside the Loop: -- a bit southwest of it -- on Jackson at Clinton. I haven't been there in years, but the coffee, eggs and Milk Duds to patrons waiting have always been delightful.

Other nice options include Orange on Harrison near Clark in the South Loop. There's Wishbone, across from Harpo Studios in the West Loop and a West Egg Cafe on East Washington, that's actually in the Loop.

Further north, along the Magnificent Mile you might try The Oak Tree in 900 N. Michigan or the Original Pancake House on Bellevue, about a block west of Lake Shore Dr. And, of course, all the big hotels have restaurants that serve breakfasts.

Orange on Harrison (sadly) is closed. They still have the original one in Boystown, the newish one in Roscoe Village, and a soon to open one in West Town.

Lou Mitchell's will take you out of your way, but it's a short cab ride to Mag Mile appointments. If you want solid diner food, there's Ada's on Wabash & Madison. The Pancake House gets my vote.

Oh, and there's Meli's, on Halsted in Greektown, a bit west of the Loop. Another really nice breakfast place.

1) Heaven on Seven, a funky New Orleans restaurant up on the 7th floor of the Garland Building on Wabash right behind Macy's, heart of the Loop, is an amazing and unusual place for breakfast. Where else can you find Bananas Foster Pecan French Toast and a Shrimp Creole Omelet? Go to "chicago restaurant menus" to see their menu (and 3000 other menus too). 2) The Sheraton Hotel, right on the river, lower level, has an all-you-can-eat huge breakfast for about $20 pp. It's set up as chef stations and you can just keep going back to try everything.
