What happened to Lombardos in downtown Vancouver?

Went by it today and it's now the Pacifica Pizzeria - any word on what happened? Does anyone have a review of this new operation?

All I heard was that it closed. The Commercial Dr operation is still up and running.

I walked by today and asked. Apparently there were 3 owners and 1 is gone (the one who owns the rights to the name) so 2 remain and had to change the name. The hostess said that the staff/cooks are all still the same and that the menu has been tweaked but pizza shouldn't taste different. I might try it tonight and if I do will post a review.

Thanks for taking one for the team, selena :-). Ate there with a friend last summer before the name change and it was both meh and spendy, we thought.

Agreed grayelf, what the heck does it take in Vancouver to come up with a really good "artisan" quality pizza? I mean it's not like we're developing a molecular gastronomy menu from scratch.....

There, now I feel better after my rant.

we don't really have good pizza here -you are right! If you ever go to Victoria please check out Primastrada-it is sooooo delicious. I don't get out there very often but sometimes wish I could make the ferry ride over just to eat the pizza there!

You don't have to go to Victoria for good pizza.

Actually I forgot about Rocky Mountain Flatbread-I like having their pizza sometimes because it's tasty and healthy and they use excellent ingredients....

I've been once....I should go back, because it was good. I also like the idea of DIY pizza when kids are in tow.

Hey, thanks for that Selena. I live in the neighbourhood and it had become one of those places to z"just pop into" - I was hoping that it hadn't changed too much! Not very inventive name though - the ex-Mrs. Lombardo is obviously the one who left.

Hi there, sorry I haven't replied back-I have meant to go there twice now and have ended up at Azia (didn't have a good experience) and then we were supposed to go yesterday we ended up at Nook (new pizza place that got good reviews in the Globe and Mail) and the pizza there wasn't very good either...actually Lombardo's when it was there was much better than Nook (Robson and Denman). Have you tried Pacifica yet? I will let you know if I try it this week which I am really hoping to do.

What was wrong with Nook? From your opinion Selena? We were there a couple weeks ago and thought it was alright...

I guess I just found the pizza underwhelming and average and said I didn't like it because I had a read a glowing review in the paper and went there the same night so was expecting it to be really good. To be fair though I didn't try pasta and my husband liked his pizza-I was just expecting the pizza to be better than Lombardo's and for me it wasn't.

I'm a bit late in getting this posted... but, I did make it in to Pacifico Pizza last Saturday. Apparently, when the owner of Lombardo's (on the Drive) opened this location, she did so with her divorce lawyers - oh what a tangled web we weave... anyway, naturally, friction developed and she bolted with the name. Otherwise, everything is basically the same as it was before. The staff are all still there and there have been some minor tweaks to the menu (nothing serious). Basically, if you liked it before, you'll like it now. If you didn't like it before, you're probably not reading this thread anyway :) It will continue to be my one of my local haunts. Finally, I mentioned to them that the large american pizza chain "Pacifico Pizza" is positioned to become the next Domino's (read: a march across the border is almost inevitible) and they might want to re-think the name before "Pacifico" becomes imprinted with Vancouverites.

Interesting! (and just weird....isn't there some sort of conflict of interest going on here?) Anyway, I wish both parties luck. Maybe Mrs Lombardo can go back and crack the whip at the Commercial Dr location. They have oven management issues there.

No kidding! I mean she can't prevent them from using her recipes! I'm hopeful that, even though she's gone from downtown, the kitchen won't suffer but I suspect it will, Commercial Drive took a serious quality hit after the downtown opening. After all, the pesto only spreads so far... :)
