Hello everyone,
I hail from the UK where lamb shanks are very abundant, sadly, I cannot seem to locate any here in the supermarkets in my area. I have tried Giant, Food Lion, Shop-rite and Wegmans (to no avail!!). There are no high street butchers where I live so am at a loss. I have tried searching on-line but still remain shankless. I know a Canadian poster asked a similiar question and had wonderful responses. I'd really appreciate any tips on where I can find these delicious delicacies as I'd love to ccok them for the 4th. Thanks so very much....

Union Meats in Eastern Market in DC has terrific lamb shanks - and excellent lamb in general.
Theirs might seem more expensive compared to the cryovaced supermarket variety, but they're the super-trimmed type that restaurants buy so I've found them worth the premium.

The farmer’s Line, the arts and crafts market and the historic Eastern Market will all be open on Saturday, the 4th of July. But the South Hall where Union Meats is located will close at 3 PM - about 2 hours early.

If you're in NoVA, try the Lebanese Butcher in Falls Church, at the corner of Annandale Road and Wash Blvd. They always have lamb bits and whole beast too. Really, though, any halal butcher in DC/NoVA/MD area will have lamb.

Giant does carry it, but if it's not in the case you have to ask the butcher for it. It's something they can get easily tool. Have you tried Harris Teeter? If not, do.

The Amish farmer stand at the Mclean Farmers' Market on Friday has them, or did the last time I checked.
For dining, Kazan's in McLean prepares primium lamb shanks wonderfully. It's a great dish, worth a visit.

I get them at Wegman's in Fairfax, but they don't always have them, they seem to sell out quickly you have better chance when you shop there on a weekday, when I can't get them with normal groceries, I go to the Lebanese Butcher.

If you are concerned about quality then I suggest you follow Cocinero's advice and make it to the Lebanese Butcher. Call ahead to make sure they have what you are looking for. The last time I was there they had a skinned (wooled?) lamb hanging from a hook behind the counter.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. I called Safeway in Bel Air MD yesterday and the butcher informed me that he usually always has them in stock. I am now well stocked and ready to embark on my recipe - slow roasting in port and red wine. Thanks again guys....
