Can we BYOB to J & J's?
Love this Shanghai style restaurant on Valley Blvd. and know they don't have a liquor license but wondered if we can bring beer and wine and if we did, would they be cool with that? I just called to ask and the lady who answered the phone didn't speak English. I can always find a Mandarin-speaking friend to call but wondered if any Chowhounds would know. Thanks so much.

I've done it (with beer) before and it was not a problem. Just leave a nice tip when you're done.

Thanks so much. Has anyone brought wine where the restaurant would have to supply glasses? We love the food @ J & J and have gone a dozen or so times, but have never found them overly friendly. Maybe it's the language thing. There's another Shanghai style restaurant in the same strip center - forget the name - but they're more welcoming. That said, we like the food at J & J's better.

re: mocro
I'm sorry, but if you're interested in bringing wine *and* wine glasses to J&J, you really shouldn't be eating there. That is patently ridiculous and completely out of place for a joint like that. Even if you manage to do it, you will still come off as pretentious and probably annoy every other person sitting there. BYOB, now that I could see if you were very nice about it and tipped well as the other poster said.

re: QualityMart
I'm sorry, I think you misunderstood. We wouldn't bring wine glasses - that would be weird - just plastic cups discreetly. I just wasn't sure if they'd even give us extra water glasses for the wine or if they prefer people don't bring alcohol and I wouldn't want to offend. My husband and I haven't cared that much about no alcohol, but we're bringing a group and people will want to drink. It's no problem if we go somewhere else as there are so many great choices.
