A little background - we lived in Lincoln Square for 10 years, then moved to the burbs 4 years ago. Two babies later, and we rarely get into the city for dinner, sigh.

Hubby and I are spending an August weekend downtown without the kiddos, to celebrate my Bday. Romantic dinner one night, gathering with friends the next.

We are looking for a place that will let us linger over dinner and drinks, for a group of 10-12 people. Some of our old favorites are Cafe 28 and Bistro Campagne. Ideally we'd love something with a bar near by, so the group can move there after dinner.

Any part of the city is fine, really.

Thanks in advance!!

How about Andersonville? Anteprima would be a nice place for getting together with friends. It is as close to being in Italy as one can get in Chicago. The back porch should be open now, so accomodating a party of 12 should not be a problem. Afterwards, Charlie's Ale House is always a fun place to hang out. Or the wine bar at In Fine Spirits.

I had dinner at Sol de Mexico (3018 N Cicero) last week. Nice atmosphere, delicious Margarita and Malbec by the glass. Appetizers of squid and cold avocado soup were unique, expertly prepared, and well-presented. They are justifiably proud of their mole sauces--the rack of lamb is especially tasty. Almost too stuffed for dessert, but the flan was great. Good coffee, served nice and hot.

Service is attentive but relaxed. There should be no problem lingering for drinks, conversation, or whatever.
