Sidecar Prix Fixe: Review

  • 2

Sidecar on College offers a three course prix fixe menu for $24 on Sundays through Thursdays. I went with my parents and husband on Sunday, and we were all really impressed. The food was good, the service impeccable, and the value outstanding. I wholeheartedly recommend this spot!

I had the mushroom soup to start, which I loved. It was really mushroomy (not too creamy) and had a little more pepper than I would have expected. My dad also had (and loved) the soup. My husband had the Sidecar salad and didn't really like it. It looked kind of gross, actually. Everything in it was white and was chopped into small cubes. The house-made bread was warm and delicious and came with butter that tasted just a teensy bit like garlic. I could barely restrain myself with that bread!

For the main course, my mom and I had the crispy roasted chicken with rapini and roasted fingerling potatoes, and we were both satisfied. The skin was crunchy and peppery, and the chicken was cooked perfectly. My dad said his salmon was "melt in your mouth" good, and my husband really enjoyed his fettucini with tomato sauce and shrimp. I was a little nervous about his choice — pasta can be deeply unsatisfying in restaurants — but the fettucine was fresh, the sauce was clearly house made with real tomatoes, and the shrimp were big, fresh and numerous. We had a beautiful bottle of California chardonnay with the meal, and I don't think one of us had to pour a drop for ourselves. Our water glasses were kept full, too. The service felt like fine dining service. Dessert was chocolate truffle squares — boy were they good. Rich and tasty, served with real whipped cream and blueberries. What a treat.

We wanted to sit on the patio, but it was supposed thunderstorm. We made reservations for the patio, and were reminded over the phone of the forecast. When we arrived, the maitre d' had his iPod out and re-checked the weather for us, and warned us again about sitting outside. The sky was blue, so we decided to risk it, although we really appreciated his concern. The patio is really pretty — a lovely outdoor oasis in the city. We sat under an umbrella, just in case. We were the only ones brave enough to risk the downpour. We made it through our first two courses rain-free, but the downpour started just as we were ready to start our dessert. We moved our chairs under the centre of the umbrella, and held our plates of truffles in our hands and ate without a table as the lightning flashed and the thunder crashed, safe and dry under the umbrella. Our server didn't bat an eyelash, and cheerfully came out in the rain to clear our dishes and make sure we were okay.

My parents paid the bill (thanks mom and dad!) and we left, but realized we'd been undercharged. We went back to settle the bill properly, and realized that the server hadn't added the bottle of wine. All in, I think the bill for the four of us came to $150 (my mom didn't do the prix fixe — she just had the main course, and ate my dad's dessert). My parents paid for the wine, and out of gratitude for our honesty, a man who seemed like the owner poured us all free "deconstructed caesar" shots. It was a lovely gesture.

We will certainly go back whenever we get the chance, and you all should, too!

  1. i was there on sunday as well, but we opted to not dine on the patio due to the maitre d's weather warning. it was my first time there and absolutely echo your comments, service was great, the prix fixe is a great value (the server called the dessert flourless chocolate cake, but it def. seemed way more dense than cake! but so tasty). for drinks, i had the sidecar and the badass mojito, def. appreciate well-made drinks compared to a lot of places that don't use good/fresh ingredients. will def. be back, hopefully to eat on the patio.

not sure if you are aware, but dine.to has a special if you buy their gift certificate - $45 for a $50 g.c.!

    1. We were there about six months ago, and they forgot to charge us for the wine as well! They were very thankful when we pointed this out to them.
