Rather than trying to freeze some cake after our wedding, my wife and I had a tradition of going back to the bakery each year and getting a small cake for our anniversary.

This year is our 15th, and the original bakery is long since closed. Any suggestions for great carrot cake, cream cheese frosting? Don't mind chunky, but not dry.

We had Montclair baking a couple years ago--I don't remember why, but we didn't care for it so much. I have never tried a cake from Walnut Creek Bakery, but I think they use buttercream on the carrot cake. I'll have to call them. We had the cake from a Sweet Affair in Walnut Creek last year--it was pretty good. Teacakes doesn't do anything bigger than cupcakes. I don't think Bakesale Betty does carrot cake...or does she? Anything else to try?

thanks.

Virginia Bakery in Berkeley does a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. It's better than their regular cake, but not great.

I second the Sweet A suggestion. I think the carrot cake is the best thing I've ever gotten from Sweet Adeline. It had a beautiful crumb, the carrots added a wonderful moistness and were very finely grated (so it didn't have a crunch like you sometimes get with carrot cake) and the cream cheese frosting was applied with a light hand that really highlighted the delightfulness of the cake. I should add that I had the carrot cake in the form of an Easter cake ( shaped like an egg), so I don't know if it is their standard recipe or if it was a specialty product. Whatever. I'm obsessed with cake and I occasionally think about that carrot cake...

I've gotten carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese frosting at Bakesale Betty's in the past, but I don't know if they are a regular item. They were fantastic - not too sweet, good balance of spices, and great frosting. I have not seen carrot cake in a larger form there, though.

Ladyfingers does a nice traditional carrot cake that has remained the same for ever. In fact, we had it at our wedding more than 20 years ago. They are on Santa Clara in Oakland ... If you get off the Harrison Street exit on 580, you will pass them (either direction)
http://www.ladyfingersbakery.com/
They also make a very good blackbottom cake.

Ladyfingers flies under the chow-radar -- I think because of the awful (no foot traffic, awkward car access) location. But they're reliably good, and have been, as you said, for a long time. I occasionally picked up stuff from there when I worked in downtown Oakland in the late '80s.
