Places for lunch around Milpitas

roguebear Jun 29, 2009 11:50 AM

I work in Milpitas near the 880-237 interchange. I'm looking for some under the radar cheap/quick lunch places around milpitas. Places I've done:

McCarthy Ranch restaurants
Milpitas Sqr Restaurants
Lee's Sandwiches
Taco Truck
Gourmet Express

I'm looking for something that would be relatively quick and less than $20/person.

New India Chaat Cafe on Main St is homestyle Indian food . For $6 you get a thali ( combo plate) but its vegetarian only.

I had never heard of New India Chaat Cafe before this post and decided to look it up on Yelp. I noticed that the average review there is 2 1/2 stars out of 5 (most places average 3 1/2), and there are many 1 star reviews.

I second Banana Leaf for that area. I haven't experienced how fast they can fire orders for lunch, but the food there is delicious. I enjoy their curries a lot.

The wait at lunch is horrible at Banana Leaf, and they don't take reservations. Better alternative is Layang Layang. I prefer the service and food there.

        Layang Layang
        181 W Calaveras Blvd, Milpitas, CA 95035

Where is Layang Layang? I mean banana leaf has definitely gotten a bit overdone for me too. Though I usually go early/late to avoid the wait

Same complex as Lee's Sandwich, to the right of the save-mart (or whatever supermarket that is) on Calaveras.

            Menu here:

The Korean tofu place in the same complex is pretty good too.

Gourmet Express (love the chicken shwarma plate with lemon garlic potatoes, hummus, and baba ganoush). Everything's garlicky and they make the best hummus and baba g I've ever had. Sorry, just realized you already listed it.

Mikonos Grill (not the best Greek food I've had but pretty good and really cheap)

Suraj (good Indian buffet for $10)

Tirupathi Bhimas (this place has my favorite South Indian food; love the dosa and utthapam)

Mama's Curry (ONLY good thing I've tried is the channa masala but you get an OBSCENE amount of food for the price).

De Afghanan (LOVE their chapli kabob - beef patty kabob - and potato bolani - like potato naan; it's in Fremont but worth the drive).

Vung Tau (great beef onion rolls).

Banana Leaf (only for the basil chicken; I've been burned on many dishes)

Here's my Yelp list on Milpitas:

In Fremont, Da Afghanan is Da Afgha-Great!
