Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Midwest

April rehearsal dinner in St. Paul

Can you recommend a good place/idea for a wedding rehearsal dinner? Required: Good food, informal atmosphere, reasonable price (already going broke here). St. Paul location would be ideal. What have you tried?

    1. How informal are you going for? If you are trying to stay away from meeting rooms at hotels and the like, even "reasonable" can be expensive. Do you need a private room? If so, for how many?

Here are some options. Kozlaks (same family as Jax Cafe) in Shoreview, not St Paul...but has quality food, many years of great customer service (over 30 yrs), free parking and their prices are reasonable. www.kozlaks.com

In St Paul specifically, Degidios Italian restaurant is a decent option. In this day and age, their prices are ridiculously inexpensive. www.degidios.com

Additionally in St Paul - decent food at decent prices is Mancini's. They have a private room that accommodates up to 40-50 I believe? next to the lounge/bar area and the rest rooms, and their price for the room rental and meal includes other bennies like a few appetizers, etc. that are not always thrown in at other venues.

Informal as in: We could wear jeans if we wanted, and the food would be fun. Buca would be my idea of informal ... but I'm tired of Buca's food. Not sure on the number I'll need to accommodate, but maybe 25-30? Good ideas all! Keep 'em coming. I'm looking into Salut, the Liffey and Sweeney's, too.

Sweeney's has an upstairs room that will likely meet your needs, and I think you can reserve it well in advance. I'd also see if Brasa would accommodate you (accept your order ahead of time, be ready for you, etc). Cheeky Monkey would have plenty of options in a casual setting. The tough part for those latter two suggestions is what night of the week you are looking at. They may have enough business on Friday nights already, for example.

I did check Brasa because their food is so good. But they don't have a private room. We'd have to have them deliver somewhere else. I won't have time to deal with that. I will definitely check Cheeky Money! Hadn't thought of that one ...
