After a lovely meal at Sushi Gen last night (albacore sashimi appetizer, tuna sushi, buttery toro sashimi), we adjourned to the Golden Gopher on 8th Street to check out the bar scene. There were only a few stalwart downtown denizens at 9:30, but they've remodeled an old dive into a cozy, elegant space complete with narrow patio and couches for the smokers. A large selection of good tequilas, scotches, special cocktails, etc., but the beer and wine selections were disappointing. Parking right in front with a guard outside the door. This place looks like it would be fun for a Friday night happy hour or with a group of people after dining downtown.

Have been there several times. Far better on weeknights than weekends. A few saturdays ago it was so crowded I'm surprised the fire department didn't shut it down. Vibe is pretty hip, with the median age definitely around 30 or under!

Just went there for the first time last week and really liked the low key vibe of the place. Was originally trying to get into the Standard rooftop but they were pulling the guest list/hotel guest only velvet rope thing with a 1-hour wait. The Golden Gopher margaritas are pretty good, and the jukebox had everything from Joy Division to Johnny Cash. Looking forward to the other downtown bars planned by the owners.

LOL, I think I know who you are talking about. Speaking of Joy Division, the Standard did have David J of Bauhaus as a weekly DJ over the summer . . he still might be doing it on Wednesdays but I still won't go near the place on the weekend!
