Simple request I hope: I'm looking for the most atmospheric (loads of character) pub lunch experience in the Old Town of Edinburgh (preferably near Edinburgh Castle). I assume most of these spots are frequented by tourists, which is ok if this is a "real deal" pub - lots of character and good food. We have a group of 8 gents. THANKS!!!

A guide to the most historic pubs can be found here - many of the ones listed serve a selection of great beers

Closest to the castle - below the castle is the area of the grassmarket with an assortment of pubs some that do food

As far as I know there isn't a pub near the Castle with a reputation for food - its probably standard pub grub
