Caffe Shakerato and Zeppole @ Tootsie’s at the Stanford Barn (Palo Alto)

Back at Tootsie’s on Tuesday for lunch with my friend Julie --- can you tell I adore this teensy caffe?

In the heat, I was craving some iced coffee, and Tootsie’s serves up the Italian summer time treat, caffee shakerato. Cool Terzi espresso goes into a cocktail shaker with ice, sugar, and maybe a little milk or cream, then gets some cocktail flair to shake it until a frothy head forms. This was my first experience with shakerato, and I loved it.

We shared a shaded table on the patio overlooking the lavender plantings in full bloom. In the day’s warmth, the scent was almost intoxicating.

I had the panzanella, $8, made with some dead ripe tomatoes, cucumbers and mozzarella di bufala. Fresh mozz, still milky in the center and very tender. These are prepped to order, so the olive-oiled croutons are still crunchy and not soaked through. A little hard for my tastes, but delicious nonetheless.


Julie had the asparagus salad, which is topped with sieved hard-cooked egg and anchovies, and served with some bread. She asked for hers with some tuna for extra protein, as shown here.

The last time I was here, the owner said I’d need to return for the bombolini. Not available this day, but I did get to try the wonderful zeppole. Made with choux paste, these eggy wonders dusted with sugar come three to an order for $1.50. These were the best donut holes I’ll ever eat.
