Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in DC/Baltimore and Suburban Virginia

Eastern Market reopens this weekend!!!

There's a ribbon-cutting Friday morning at 10:30. http://www.thehillishome.com
That's sort of the locals and some politicians. And a first peek - except for everybody who's been sneaking in all week while the South Hall vendors have been setting up.

Then Saturday, is the BIG deal with a street festival all day long.

Music, food, and fun.
It's likely to be mobbed with everyone who has missed the grand old place.

The City got it done only 6 months behind schedule and (I think) under budget. Is that possible???
The Market is beautiful. Risen from the ashes and better than ever.
Wait until you see it!!!!

I've got my shopping list ready to go! See you there...

    1. it was open today for full service (soft opening)

I complimented Mrs. Calomiris on the WaPo profile printed Wednesday and she gave me a hug! even Jack at the cheese counter was smiling!

counters feel oddly higher than before - must be a floor treatment/drainage issue.

it looks great. and connects directly to the North hall now with an exhibit on the history .
and rebuilding. I know you're just joshing, but 6 months behind for a reno is not ridiculous.

the team did a really good job, and finally ADA accessible for our wheeled friends. and it's sprinklered!

"only six months behind" is a modern miracle! Especially for an historic preservation of that quality. Wow. The City did a great job and the Market is fabulous. Even clean, lovely bathrooms after all these years!
Yeah, the counters are high. Juan Jose Canales said the health department made the city install the cases 6 inches off the ground. They're hard to see over, aren't they?

The vendors were having a great time today welcoming everyone back. Tommy at Market Lunch pulled out the entire tray of beautiful softshells so my daughter could pick just the one she wanted. Everyone laughs that she learned to walk at EM and she's now almost 30.

The sight of the day? A guy from Union Meats carrying a whole pig over his shoulder out to somebody's car. Not likely to see that anyplace else in town.
Eastern Market is back, thank God!

yeah I'm not a sentimental person, but I was kind of choked up. it's what drew me to the neighborhood long before I actually moved here in 2000.

I will have to check out the ceramic studio soon, was just too nice seeing everyone back in their usual places.

prob.will skip the festivities and crowds and swoop in before closing (I picked up most Friday) but wanting to see what tomatoes might be in on the farmers row. With the 4th and Congress out, the WVA produce woman sounded worried about customers showing up this week.

anyway the designers and crews and all involved stakeholders did an amazing job. Salut.
