LOVE Kill Devil Grill in OBX

For the second year in a row, on our night out for dinner while in the Outer Banks, we (wife, two young kids) drove south from Corolla to eat at Kill Devil Grill in Kill Devil Hills (mile marker 9.75, I beleive). Both times it was excellent, and this most recent trip was better than the first.

Started with the cheesesteak egg rolls, which would usually not appeal to me, but my wife, uncharacteristically wanted them, and I'm glad she did. These were ridiculously good. Came with a basily tomato sauce for dipping, which didn't seem right to me, but, believe me, it worked.

For entrees my wife and I both got specials. She got the steamed halibut, if I recall correctly, topped with a smoked shrimp guac, on top of rice, with a black bean puree. Really tasty. Perfectly prepared. I got the soft-shelled crabs, two lightly fried crabs on top of fantastic cheese grits with a nice helping of andouille gumbo surrounding the dish. Fantastic.

This is the kind of restaurant I love -- ingredient driven, attention to detail, and absolutely unpretentious. Diner setting, and even some throwback alternative tunes (Smiths, Echo, New Order) to complete the unique atmosphere.

My highest recommendations. This would be a great restaurant in any city. When in OBX, show it some love.

On the way out of town, got some fresh redfish to cook at home the next night. Wonderful way to end a vacation, particularly after the long drive back to western PA.

  1. Kill Devil Grill is one of our favorites as well. (Yes, it's on the Beach Road at mile post 9.75). My wife and I have had dinner there many times and have never been disappointed. By the way, the key lime pie is my favorite dessert there.
