Silver Spring Indian - Bombay Gaylord or Ghar e kabab (or somewhere else)?

Hey all - where's the best indian in SIlver Spring? Looking for the standards like Chicken Tikka Masala, Biryanis, etc. I work up here and go out to lunch very rarely (waistline, you know...) so I'd like to know what I'm getting before I waste thousands of callories. Thanks folks!

  1. Ghar-e-kabab, hands down. Ghar-e-kabab is VERY good--the lunch buffet is excellent. There are buffets that offer more choices, but there are few around that offer the quality. They usually have three or four veggie selections, a curry, tandoori chicken, salads, dressing and chutneys, and a very good pickle. Also included is fresh nan and a dessert.

The biryanis are quite good and the standards, like butter chicken and lamb dishes, are quite tasty. And there are also Nepali dishes that you can order from the menu....and that occasionally turn up on the buffet.

I don't want to criticize Bombay Gaylord, but there really is no comparison.

I'll give GEK a try next week. Thanks Jeff!

    2. I've never been to either, to be honest. But I did want to mention Udupi Palace on University. I think technically it is in Takoma Park, but it just a couple miles down University from Silver Spring. It is excellent. A friend of mine is from Southern India and said this place reminds her of her mother's food. I think that's a pretty good endorsement!

      1. I recently had a very good dinner at Ghar-e-kabab. I remember eating a Nepalese grilled goat meat dish that was as "boneless" as advertised, a hard thing to do usually with goat. The Indian dishes at the table were solid too.

Great food and friendly, attentive service.

Another GeK fan turned on by Jeff Craddock. Great buffet, especially if you get there at 11:30. The Nepali Thali is superb. The Nepali dishes are all very tasty and the beaten rice dishes are very interesting. Great place.

For fast food Pakistani Kabob, Kabob N Karahi on Ne Hampshire is really good too! Up by Cloverly.

Not in silver spring but close by is Tiffin's. They have excellent food and a good lunch time buffet. Their sister resteraunt is Udupi Palace, which is an all vegetarian place.

Oops, missed this thread. For completeness' sake in case this comes up in a search I'd say Woodlands instead of Udupi - and I've seen that opinion elsewhere on here. The menu is good but the weekend buffets are spectacular - lots of south Indian stuff that you don't see that often elsewhere. (Woodlands is across Univ Blvd)

And I agree about Ghar-e-Kabab vs. Bombay Gaylord. I don't think BG is particularly exciting.

Just in case someone digs up this thread via search - Udupi is closed and has merged with Tiffin.

                1. re: reiflame

Sorry to hear about Udupi Palace, but I always thought the nearby Woodlands was just as good. Tiffin is just a few doors down the street from Udupi.

OMG - it really closed? That's shocking! Tiffin was owned by the same people so I assume they are continuing with the great Dhosas, etc.

Also, original poster was looking for Chicken Tikka and Biryani (Mugalai cuisine). Udupi and Woodlands are South Indian Vegetarian - totally different cuisine. Check out Karahi n Kabob for Mugalai food.

I just found out tonight Udupi had closed & am heartbroken. I went to Tiffin instead -- they are now advertising Udupi's menu -- and found most of what I was craving. Has anyone found vegetable cutlets elsewhere? They were my favorite food at Udupi & didn't make the transition to Tiffin. I don't even know what they are made of to try them at home.

                    1. re: Teehome

I'd never been to Tiffin but heard that it was not as good and more expensive than Udupi. Can you tell if the food has suffered in the transition?

No clue on the veggie cutlets; maybe the kitchen at Tiffin can make them for you with advance notice?

            2. You didn't specify which part of Silver Spring--this is not in downtown Silver Spring but imo it's the best choice for local Indian. Frankly I don't get Ghar E Kebab--food was average and service was excruciatingly slow.
