I was watching the classic Man v Food episode last night where Adam Richman burns a hole in his stomach by eating phaal curry in at a NYC restaurant, and was thinking--do any Indian restaurants in the Boston area serve this dish? I'm a bit scared to try it, but might have to do so some day, just to see what it's like.

I don't know but IMO, you'd be hard pressed to find even a serviceable vindaloo.

Paal curry is from the Kongunadu region of Tamilnadu state and made with coconut milk, potatoes, onions and green chillies. It is spicy but not spicy enough to burn a hole in anyone's stomach unless you are card carrying Mikey Dees club member. I don't think any indian restaurant in Boston carries this. You could ask "The Pongal" in Billerica to see if they would make it for you. Unless the cook is from the specific region where this dish is popular, most cooks won't have an idea of how to cook it right.

Arak's description of the real dish is very interesting! Clearly the Man vs. Food episode will have been about the macho curry of UK fame, which is a garlic/ginger/onion sauce-base dish turned up to 12.

About that NYC thing -- a free pint of Kingfisher is a poor reward for the challenge. Surely they should take it off the bill. Maybe it's not hot enough ...

Kingfisher is what you pee after drinking decent beer. I have no idea why people think KF represents decent indian beer. It is the equivalent of Bud Light in India.

I prefer a pint of Cobra, which I reckon is a noticeable improvement on Kingfisher, though by no means a great beer either.

That's fake phaal curry from the UK and not India. Lol, I'll stick with the real stuff. There are blow your tongue off curries and other dishes from India. But you can't find them anywhere outside of their specific regions even within India.
