Japanese Style Bento Boxes

Does anyone know if there's a Japanese Bento delivery place in Manhattan? I was able to get great ones delivered for lunches in Tokyo (I know, it's not Tokyo) that always had rice and veggies, but the main dish was a surprise. You would call and order the morning of or a week in advance and you'd be set for lunch.

I k now lots of places have a bento -- but it usually involves chicken teriyaki or sushi plus some form of dumpling, and no rice (which was the best part)!.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. Chiyoda Sushi is probably the biggest supplier of bentos around NYC. They make rounds to many Japanese businesses, but they also have a store on 41st St. Check them out.

    1. Yes, there are a few companies that do just like Tokyo where you fill out a sheet and fax it or fill out a webform. They cater to the Japanese offices in Mid-town. They also do catering. I don't know the names, so I suggest just searching in Japanese.

in chopsticks perhaps? the big bento feature? I was just about to reach for that and saw you already hit that up.

Nice link. Yeah, this about boils it down to the sublime credibility of blog coverage of Japanese food:

"Some of the ingredients and bentos are a little too weird for the average American"

Gotta say, if the "average American's" lunch of choice comes from those mediocre delis that Midtown supports in vast numbers, that blog quote sounds about right.

Anyone tried bento lunches from an outfit called Yuzu? It came up a few years back ( ). They're in Queens, but they deliver to Midtown if the order's large enough.

I was briefly on Yuzu's e-mail list for some reason but never tried it. I've attached a sample menu from a couple years ago (hope it's legible).
