Dry Sherry - Where to find in Paris?
hi,
my friend who is not a chowhounder lives in paris and needs dry sherry for a cantonese recipe she is trying. i told her that i thought she could find it in any wine merchant under the name jerez fino. she seems to think otherwise. could one of you nice paris hounds weigh in on this one? she lives somewhere near the place des vosges, i think.
thanks all,
jane

See Tim Johnston at Juveniles. He also sells lots of wine at retail and he has good Sherries.

re: ChefJune
Well if the OP really does want to use sherry it may be easier to pop along to "Lavinia" (3, boulevard de la Madeleine, 1eme).
They stock lots of international wine and have a "Bodegas Robles, Piedra Luenga Fino" on their website at €9.70 for 50cl and they will probably have more varieties in the shop (http://www.lavinia.fr/LaviniaFR/ficha...).
Of course it will be far, far cheaper, and more authentic, to use Shaoxing wine for a Chinese recipe. Sherry is often used as a substitute because it is cheap and easily available especially in the UK. I suspect that in France, sherry is going to more of a connoisseurs drink and you will pay for quality especially if Tim or Mark supply it, and that will be a waste of good sherry, which can be a superb wine.
PS: Tang Freres and the other Chinese supermarkets in the 13eme are really accessible, are modern and large. They have lots of variety and are far cheaper than regular Parisian shops especially for Asian ingredients like chilli, ginger etc.

Isn't dry sherry used as a substitute for Shaoxing wine in Chinese cooking? Wouldn't it be better to just head up to "Tang Freres" or one of the other Asian supermarkets in the 13eme and buy the real thing. She can also pick up a lot of the other specialist ingredients especially fresh produce like bok choy.
