Raleigh Triangle - Sweet Corn Tamales?

klmonline Jun 23, 2009 03:49 PM

Does anyplace around the triangle do great sweet corn tamales? You may know these as green corn tamales or tamales de elote. The model is the classic ones at El Cholo in Los Angeles, circa my university days a million years ago.

I'm not sure about the Raleigh part of the Triangle, but you might look for Salvadoran restaurants (or Salvadoran-Mexican, which is what most local Salvadoran restaurants really are). South Durham has a couple of good ones, including Cuscatleco. There was also somewhere my husband and I used to go, can't think of the name of the town, out the western side of Chapel Hill. Don't think it was Pittsboro, but if I saw the names of highways, I'd know which one. Little hole-in-the-wall-ish place along a highway other than obvious ones like 54. Will return if I think of it. In the meantime, I repeat: Look for Salvadoran restaurants, because from what I've seen it's more Central American than Mexican -- though that could be because I learned of it from Salvadorans!

Just had a delicious tamale from Pupuseria & Taqueria Orellana in north Durham this afternoon, and they are el Salvadoran.
