Had my 4th meal at Cafe Polonia on Saturday and tried the much ballyhooed pickle soup. Very good but the little bit I had of my sister's white borsch was outstanding. My pork cutlet was good but my brother's goulash was absolute heaven. Good thing we were sharing because I would have been bummed about my choices! One woman covering all the tables and she was efficient and gracious.
What a gem that place is!

I am one of those Pickle Soup ballyhooers. I went to Polonia tonight for dinner and much to my chagrin, the pickle soup was not on the menu, but the white borscht was...Wow. Certainly a meal in itself with hard boiled egg and kielbasa. This might be my new favorite.
As an aside, for those who don't know, Baltic Deli (affiliated w/ Polonia), diagonally across the street from the restaurant, has many of Polonia's soups available frozen-to the left of the door when you walk in.
Thanks for the heads up mtm

Andrew (singular) is actually quite a hike north from "pho row." Newmarket and Broadway areas are closer. And Broadway is on the T.
I'd suggest getting on the T and going in to the north end or something

Andrew Sq. isn't really a much of a dining destination. Some of the places listed are a healthy walk away. So you might want to consider other destinations, esp. since you'll be near the Andrew Red line stop.
Cafe Polonia is close and good.
224 Boston is more upscale and also pretty good.
Franklin Southie is a bit of a hike but also quite good.
Are you from Edina, MN? I grew up just down the crosstown on Lyndale.

re: C. Hamster
Wholeheartedly agree w/ Polonia. I have noticed a downward trend @ 224 Boston (don't know why and I hope it's temporary) Franklin Cafe, is more accessible from the Broadway T stop which is one stop away from from the Andrew Sq. station (this is also the better stop for St. Alphonzo's).
During the day, Baltic deli (affiliated w/ Polonia) is a fun stop as is Euromart if you find yourself heading deeper into Dorchester to places like Shanti and many of the vietnamese places for Pho and Banh Mi.
Not far at all from Andrews is "The Stadium" sports bar with middling food, but not bad if you are more interested in the sports coverage than the chow.

If we're stretching to Newmarket, I'll add M&M Ribs..also a fan of Speeds, Hen House and Polonia (don't forget about the Polish markets in the area.

Polonia is easily my favorite in the vicinity, but not too far away: Victoria's Diner, a respectable diner with overnight hours on weekends; 224 Boston, a solid, slightly creative American restaurant, kind of bistro-y; and the legendary Speed's, our best local hot dog cart, lunch only.

Newmarket is still way closer than Shanti and the pho places that were suggested. Those are way down Dot ave past Columbia to Savin Hill. If you are going to go that far, I'd say stop and eat at dBar instead.
The walk to Newmarket is gnarly, I agree. And probably not the best thing to do at night.
