Big Mista's - Atwater Village 05/21

So thanks to the CH board, my wife and I took a trip out to Atwater Village to get some Big Mista's this morning.

It's a nice little market, we got some great strawberries, plums and bread, but the real reason to be there was waiting in the back of the market. By the time we got there around 9:30 there was already about five people waiting. The smell of woodsmoke and spice (coupled with kettle corn from another stand) whetted our appetite, but Big Mista kept to his 10am open time, and since Mrs. Big Mista was en route with Macaroni and Cheese and desserts, we were happy to wait.

We wound up getting a pound of sliced brisket, a quarter slab of ribs, a half pound of pulled pork, a large container of mac and cheese, a medium of beans, a jar of sauce, a serving of sweet potato pie, peach cobbler and a red velvet cupcake. All that cost us about $40.

We dug into the red velvet cupcake on the way home (just a taste) and found it amazing, the cream cheese frosting was light and flavorful, the cake moist and actually tasting of cocoa.

We made hash with some of the pulled pork for brunch - the smoky, lean pork made a great breakfast, and their spicy sauce went perfectly on the hash. I'm looking forward to a sandwich later in the week from that pork.

We had most of the rest for dinner - the brisket is my new favorite, fork tender slices with a great smoky flavor, perfect with or without the sauce. The ribs are the sparerib sort with a perfect toothsome texture, with that great knob of meat at the end that gets a little caramelized. We got three in the quarter slab, though the people ahead of us were getting two slabs each. I could seriously have just eaten the ribs, they were really meaty and tasty.

The macaroni and cheese - I can see why this sells out, Mrs. Big Mista brought two pans of it which did not look like they were going to last too long, and after we tried it tonight my wife declared it even better than hers (which never happens!). Very creamy with a strong sharp cheese flavor. My wife said the beans were a little too peppery, so she doctored them up with some sauce, and I found them really good.

I haven't gotten into the desserts yet, but if they're anything like that cupcake they should be great.

We picked up his catering menu when we were there, he's got some amazing sounding appetizers and desserts, including smoked bacon-wrapped meatballs, and smoked candied bacon (pig candy!). Now to find an event that I can get him to cater...

I thought that Hogly Wogly's was the best barbecue in LA. I can still get behind the brisket there, but I now have a new favorite!

  1. You heard it here on Chowhound first! Put some coleslaw on that pulled pork and make a great sandwich.

Might I suggest the Ina Garten's (the Barefoot Contessa) cole slaw - I've made it for years and it is fantastic!

    2. Is there a website on that catering menu?

      1. It's on his site:

Check out the appetizer and dessert selections! Moink Balls! Pig Candy!

Having sampled the desserts I can say the Red Velvet Cupcake is a huge success, the Sweet Potato Pie is good, not too sweet, definitely home made. The peach cobbler is tasty but could use more peaches. All very good though.

I am definitely looking forward to using my leftovers in a series of different sandwiches!

I think you were right ahead of us on line!!! Anyway, BigMista sometimes has Pig Candy at Atwater...just ask. We love everything he (and the rest of the family) makes. Our doctors are not very happy, but we keep taking the statins........and enjoying.......

Oooh, now I gotta go back even more, just to see if he has pig candy. We've now had about five meals from our BBQ and we're not done yet.

I hear the Atwater on Father's Day was his best day ever (so he said on Twitter).

        2. I just heard that BigMista will be establishing a booth at the Eagle Rock Farmer's Market on Friday evenings from 5 pm to 8:30 pm. The FM is located at 2100 Merton Ave., near Colorado Ave. and Eagle Rock Blvd.:

Great news! I've been to Atwater, but Eagle Rock Fri nights is much better for me, and I suspect for many others. When will he have Momma's mac n cheese at the Atwater again, July 19 as the OP hints? And when will the M&C be at Atwater? C'mdn, BigMista, I know you're lurking out there!
