We're staying at a friend's place in NYC (they're not here). This morning while washing dishes, I broke a wine glass. Of course, I want to replace it. If I ask her where it came from, she will say don't worry about it. If I knew it were a cheapy I'd just buy her four or six of something inexpensive. There's only one other glass like it here and has no identifying info on it. It is VERY thin glass which may or may not be indicative of anything. We're leaving here in a couple of days but will be back around the 4th. I'm considering not mentioning it but, when we return, taking the mate to it around to Macys and the like and seeing what I can find out. Any other suggestions?

Send a picture to these guys. They will find a replacement for you, even if the pattern is no longer made. Or you might want to post a shot here and your fellow hounds can help if it is still an active pattern.

The fact that there is only one other in the apartment like it may tell you all you need to know. A number of years ago a then-current BF bought me 6 very thin glasses from Bloomingdales. The glass was thin; the stems were thin. When one broke, I went to Bloomies to try to replace it and they told me they no longer carried the item. They got too many complaints about it because it was so fragile.

I think you could make yourself totally nuts trying to find a replacement that probably doesn't exist. And if your friend only had two anyway, s/he would probably be happier to have a set of four or six matching glasses than a replacement for one glass that has a tendency to break rather easily.

Excellent advice which I intend to follow :) Unlike the excellent advice that I DON'T follow. I have SO many food adventures to have here that I hate the idea of chasing around doing that. Thanks, JoanN (MMRuth and I are making noises about getting together after the 4th. Maybe you'd be interested?)

As smtucker indicated, replacements.com is great for matching identifiable china and crystal, (they are pricey), but a non-descript red wine glass may be difficult and maybe not worth the running around. I would pick up a box of four mid-priced tomorrow after the golf tournament and call it a day.
P.S. When you and hubby visit me, I'll break out my best chinette :)

You are very kind C to go through the trouble of finding a replacement. To me, wine glasses are one of those things you can never have too many of, so rather than try to find the same one, I would get four or six different ones. Surely they will appreciate having a few extra one around.

I would personally let my friend know if I had broken one of their glasses--regardless of quality--with a request for the name of the manufacturer. While it may be nice to replace it on the sly, I'd feel guilty regardless.

If it turns out that the response is as expected, a gift certificate to Macy's, Bloomingdales, William Sonoma, or Tiffany's wouldn't hurt. It could always be viewed as a thank you gift, and not a replacement cost.

Our housekeeper or our dishwasher breaks a glass about every six weeks. The dishwasher eats fragile glasses. I've never had one so hard on glass. I just shrug and say "shit happens". It could have been me that broke it, like I did with the ultra-fragile, ultra-pricey Neiman-Marcus martini glass. Bummer. We had a nice decanter that was obviously paper thin where it broke. SO thinks these kinds of things should be looked at and not used; I say use them. I'm in the camp that there were probably more than two purchased...

I like the suggestion of telling them and then leaving or sending a gift certificate.
