A GOOD bakery in SA?!

Help! We'll be in San Antonio by Thursday so as to make it to my mother-in-law's birthday. Her sisters are planning a surprise party, but I KNOW their taste -if I can use that term- regarding any kind of food. (They consider Chef Boy ar Dee as Italian food. Seriously.)
Anyway, if I can at least find a GOOD bakery that uses real ingredients and would make a cake that doesn't taste like it came out of a box, I'd really, really be happy. (I'd do it myself, but we're living at her house and she's supposed to be surprised).

  1. Try The Cake Shop. There's one at Stone Oak and Huebner, another at I-10 and Wurzbach. I have one of their chocolate tres leches in my fridge from Father's day. Everything is from scratch and excellent.

    1. If you can get out to Boerne go to the Bear Moon bakery on main street, its excellent

Will definitely try the Cake Shop (am not savvy with the city, but "Heubner" and "Wurzbach" ring bells.
        Any other recommendations?

      2. Central Market on Broadway in Alamo Heights, I find the cake shop a bit sweet, you can buy a slice at the Cake Shop and see if you agree.

        1. Thanks [y'all] for your suggestions. Unfortunately, the aunts had already put a deposit on a cake from the local HEB (the Texas-size megamart), and didn't see why they should pay more money to go somewhere else. At the party, everybody chowed down on it except my husband and I (the fact that the party was outside where it was 103 degrees, and the icing on the cake wasn't melting at all...who knows what it was made of).
Oh well, they all enjoyed it, so that's what matters.
