We're moving next month; what edible vegetables or herbs can I plant?

The front yard is sunny and might be good for fruit trees (but that would be after the first frost next year, correct?). I've been warned not to plant mint, as it might take over the yard.

The back yard has one area with a lot of sun (15' x 3'); the rest will (eventually) be sunnier once the trees are pruned back.

I know it's late in the season for planting anything, and welcome any advice.

Thanks!
