I was sent this link about a new "Philly" cheese steak shop in American Fork, Utah.
From the local Daily Herald newspaper:

"The Downtown Philly in American Fork brings an authentic cheesesteak out West, and we couldn't be happier.
Before we get to the sandwiches themselves, a few notes on the Philly-ness of The Downtown Philly. The restaurant serves TastyKake snacks (better than Hostess, they say), Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer (something like root beer) and Herr's chips (including ketchup flavor), all regional favorites."

I laughed at the comment about the "fluffy white hoagie rolls"

When they start selling franchises, I'm going to see if I can open one up here.

Did you look at the menu on the website? They have something called a "Cream Cheese Steak". It's a steak sandwich with onions, mushrooms, red peppers and...you guessed it...cream cheese.

Let's add that to the Whiz/American/Provolone debates.

I saw another review for them in a different local paper.
Locals like the birch beer and pretzels.

It's gotta be expensive shipping those glass bottles of soda to Utah.

We lived in SLC for 3 years and went to a "cheesesteak" place and it wasn't edible. The owners claimed they were from Philadelphia. They were slicing deli roast beef and grilling the meat with onions. Very scary!

Unless I can verify that the owner and/or chef is from Philly, I will not walk into any "Philly Cheese Steak" store outside the Philadelphia area. I've found 2 - the names of which I cannot remember - one in San Francisco and one in Delray Beach. One other great find in Delray Beach was Rosa Luna for breakfast. Owners from NJ that use only Taylor's Pork Roll, something else from this area that's hard to find elsewhere.

The availability of TastyKakes bodes well. To mention them in the same breath as Hostess borders on sacrilege. I have work down in Lehi tomorrow, so I know where I am headed for lunch. Thanks for the tip... will report back!

Had lunch at the American Fork location (in the strip malls across from Costco). Pretty darned good, and WAY better than the nasty Philly Connection. I had the garlic steak sandwich. Garlic sauce was on the mild side, so I added some packaged horseradish sauce and Tabasco to pep it up. Overall quality was excellent, though the slices of cold tomato absolutely did not work in terms of taste, texture or temperature. The Herr's chips and TastyKakes were yummy. I have not had a cheesesteak in Philly, so I cannot attest to the authenticity, but this is a place I will definitely return to. Plus they have a 2nd location in South Jordan.

I'm not from Philly so I'll need some help here. I've eaten the Philly Cheesesteak twice at Forefathers - NE corner of Priest and Warner in Chandler - and it's pretty good. Love to know how it compares to Geno's and Pats. I actuallly thought it was a chain because of the well done trade dress, Etc. but I can't find any mention of other Forefather locations. Will ask next time I go back. I take this for a good sign: There were lots of people ordering "wit" at the counter.
