We sometimes take out of town guests to Mercadito (Ave B location). It's festive, fun, awesome food, great margs and extensive tequila choices. Definitely meets your criteria.

Pampano, on 49th St., b/t 2nd & 3rd Avs., serves excellent modern Mexican cuisine with an emphasis on fish and seafood. I don't drink, but my husband loves their passion fruit mojitos. No funky decor, but if this incessant rain ever stops, you can eat on their lovely second-floor terrace.

DahBa, on Lex, b/t 27th & 28th Sts. (aka "Curry Hill"), is a relatively new, casual Indian restaurant. Delicious food with complex flavors. Some dishes are hot, hot, hot spicy, while others have more a more mellowed spiciness. Very colorful decor.
