Tacquerias - Italian Market

It appears that Philly has a bunch of really good Taquerias, esp. around the Italian Market. I'm thinking that it might be interesting to try a dish at one place, then another at another, and so on. Of course, my eyes are always bigger than my stomach and I don't know how much I'd actually be able to eat, but.......in any case. What would be the best taquerias in the Market and what are your favorite dishes there?

Thanks!

  1. I love the Taqueria Veracruzana at 9th & Washington. All the tacos are great and usually what I order, but there's a dish called choriqueso wih steak, chorizo and cactus that's really good. I've tried a few other places, but this is still my favorite.

Lisa, thanks! Chorizo and catus? That sounds interesting - I've never had cactus before. Sounds like something I need to try!

    2. Los Taquitos de Puebla, which I discovered recently, has a whole section of "grisly bits". I had the lengua and the mixed cow's head tacos. My friend got a sandwich as big as her head. They also have wonderful horchata. In fact, now I'm salivating so I may go there tonight!

No, they are beans with various pork bits

Yes they are! Somehow I forgot I got one of them as well!

I think I'll avoid that section, lol.........I love horchata, though. Thanks for the tip! If you go, I'd love to hear what you had (unless it's the lengua and cow's head......)

I decided against going tonight, because I'm having a big Ethiopian meal tomorrow night so I went with a light dinner tonight! I suggest you try it though, offal or not...

I went tonight. My girlfriend and I shared the cowboy beans, a beef and chorizo sandwich with avocado, and a huitlacoche quesadilla. All were huge, fantastic and perfectly washed down with horchata. Bill came to $25. Go!

Yum! I'm going to go on the Saturday that I'm in town, when I check out the Italian Market. In fact, that beef/chorizo sandwich sounds fantastic - maybe I'll have that myself. Everything sounds so good.....

wow, what a terrific menu. - thanks for posting! My mouth is watering already, lol

              2. la lupe. any platter, any taco (except the al pastor aren't always it), any anything. :) but the service is soooo slow. am not a huge fan of el jarocho, though a lot of people like it there.

                2. Plaza Girabaldi on Washington (between 9th and 10th) is my favorite.
