Expectations Exceeded - Portuguese in Manasquan

After working late yet again, the thought of another sandwich at my desk was dreadful.
“What about trying that new place – with the wood fired oven?”
With the decision made, we headed east, stopping for some Magic Hat along the way. Perhaps borne out of civic obligation or a desire to see our local economy rebound, we had decided that we should try each of the new restaurants in town. It’s only fair that we should give them a chance. Perhaps, we might even find some tasty treats. . .
CLOSED - for the second time that we have tried to go to MoNKEY.
Retreating back along the lake, we decided that we should try the Portuguese BBQ place. “It’s just food, right? How bad can it be?”
It wasn’t. We were certainly, pleasantly surprised. The food was quite tasty. The server was friendly and attentive (granted the place was not busy).
A half loaf of Portuguese bread was brought warm to our table shortly after we sat down. It was accompanied by a bowl of olives and a couple slices of a dry cured sausage. The bread was terrific.
For entrees, we tried the Cataplana De Marisco and the Picadinho. The former, served in a copper pot, contained a generous quantity of shellfish. Although I thought the fish a tad overcooked, the flavors were just right – the pungency of the garlic, sweetness of the tomatoes and peppers, even the tang of the cilantro. The latter was a combination of grilled marinated pork and a garlicy shrimp served over pickled vegetables. We truly enjoyed it. The dishes were $26 and $16.50, respectively.
On Fridays and Saturdays, they will be doing Rodizio. Single orders are $19.50 – All you can eat for $$24.95. We look forward to trying it.
The place bears the terrible name of Surf & Turf Grill BBQ (which is part of what was keeping us away). The Portuguese specialties represent only a portion of the menu (which should change). It was quite refreshing to find something different to eat in this area. I’d say it’s worth a try. . . .
My husband and I dined there tonight. Really great food! Huge portions. Dinner for 2 was about $30 (no appetizers or dessert), but we had more than we could eat. I took home a "doggie bag" of half my plate of chicken and pork ribs with some rice. It will make a nice lunch tomorrow.
The meat is well cooked and well seasoned. Looking forward to going back there to try their Rodizio! The also have a take-out menu and they deliver! I'm so happy to have a delivery choice other than pizza or subs!
Agreed that the name is unfortunate. They should have chosen something more ethnic!
The inconsistencies that plague the Portuguese/Brazilian BBQ's in New Jersey are ridiculous. While I've never tried Surf & Turf, I've tried alot of others that sound similar. My current favorite, although nowhere near Surf & Turf, is Frango BBQ in South Amboy, I believe it's also in a different county as well. Great hand cut fries, and wonderfully consistent chicken.
