Quince replacement?

Our annual trip to SF is approaching, Bowing to financial realities, we're opting out of our usual last night's dinner at Quince. (Big sigh of resignation) I was thinking of Canteen or SPQR, both of which I've been to for lunch. What can you tell me about 54 Mint? It's walkable from our hotel.

We're looking for good food, service, bang for the buck wine list, European rather than Asian cuisine. We've been to Zuni, Delfina, A16. We love a good French bistro (Jeanty's is/was a favorite.)

Thanks for your responses.

  1. Try Beretta on Valencia? Or what about Spruce, although perhaps $$$...there's also a place on Fillmore, can't remember the name but it's between Pine and Bush where Chez Nous used to be. I know you said French but Suppenkuche at Hayes and Laguna is also good, cheap, although can be loud.

SPQR is in the same location as Chez Nous. Good food, but tables are very close together.

Regarding SPQR - The one time I tried it, it probably didn't help that we started off on the wrong foot with an hour ++ wait for our incredibly tiny and cramped table, but we found the food to be over-salted across the board, and not all that interesting. Needless to say, I'm not rushing to return.

    2. spqr for lunch is pretty similar to spqr for dinner, although the menu is a bit bigger at dinner.
Canteen on the other hand, is completely different for dinner. Small menu, very eclectic, excellent cooking. I think it is a great value.

      1. If you don't mind a 22-minute BART ride, consider A Cote in Oakland, which has the most amazing by-the-glass wine program in the area. Reservations essential unless you get there right when they open. Request the (enclosed, heated) back patio.

Closest thing in SF proper is probably Cav.

If you like Zuni, Delfina, and A16, check out my list of favorites on my profile page (click my userid below).

        1. La Ciccia? They have a great, unusual and well-priced wine list.

Second La Ciccia. Great food, great wine list, great service.

La Ciccia is always at the top of my list of favorites,t hough not as close to the downtown/financial district area where OP's hotel is apparently located. OTOH, right on the J Church line, at 30th and Church, if OP is willing to take Muni...

            2. I'd like to suggest Chez Papa Resto, next to 54 Mint, for French or--a brief cab ride away, Da Flora in North Beach (cash only but so charmant!).
