This is the second time I have bought brown basmati rice from Trader Joe's. The first time, the rice was quite good. The rice from the subsequent bag, however, tastes musty and moldy, really unpleasant. The rice looks fine in the bag and I can't figure out why it tastes so bad. I have cooked it twice now and the same thing happened. Anyone familiar with rice have any idea why this may be?

Basmati rice is supposed to be fragrant, but not musty or moldy. Take it back to TJ's and let them know about your experience. They're a good company and they wouldn't want to risk their reputation on something like that. If you don't tell them they can't fix the problem.

I would take it back, but how do you prepare it?

Do you first rinse in a bowl, skimming off any rice that floats to the top? I've had a similar problem with brown rice from other sources (Asian and standard grocery stores) and was told to skim off anything that floated to the top, which worked for me.

Brown rice goes bad / off. That - and additional energy for longer cooking - is why rice is either milled or parboiled and milled.
