Herrell's no more?

  • 9

Passed by the Herrell's in Allston yesterday and noticed it's no longer Herrell's, they're got canvas signs up now saying it's "Allston Cafe." I didn't have time to stop in and see what's changed.

This must be your doing, eh Barmy? ;-)

  1. I stopped in an heard someone in live in front of me ask about the change. Apparently Herrell's is becoming a change so in order to avoid the new regulations they had to change the name. The main different is that they will be serving less ice cream but otherwise everything should remain the same.

      Say it ain't so!

Did you mean becoming a "chain"?

If it brings Herrell's closer to me, that woudl be a good thing, but it's likely to be like the former Steve's transition, from Best in the World, to pretty good for a chain, to mediocracy, to extinction.

Based on that particular outpost -- which I stopped going to long, long ago, before the current owners stepped in -- Herrell's has long since blown past mediocrity and deep into outright sucking. Although it's right in the neighborhood and it used to be a big favorite of mine, I stopped going there shortly after receiving the only ice cream cone I have ever thrown away after a single bite.

Have to agree with you on that!

I am still searching for ice cream in Boston without stabilizers.

I don't know if they still have it, but Herrell's used to have a hot penuche topping that was out of this world. Really delicious on vanilla ice cream. That was reason enough for me to visit when I could. It's been years since I've been back though.

Yeah, the last cup of coffee Ice cream I ordered there was more ice crystals than ice cream. That was the last time I went, and that had to have been at least 2-3 years ago. Too bad, too.

Perhaps I've had better luck that you, but when I've stopped in (every 3 months or so) and picked up a couple of quarts (it's nowhere near my neighborhood, so I'm buying it to go), the ice cream has been excellent, and the only issue has been the side of 'tude that came with it.

BTW, based on what I read on the Herrell's site, it appears that this will still be a Herrell's-selling place, just that they're becoming more of a cafe. I hope that's right. They're also looking for more franchisers, so perhaps that's the start of the "chain."
