Hi all,

We're looking for a place in Chinatown (yes, needs to be Chinatown, not Monterey Park) to get really great whole lobster and crab, done up salt n pepper style, spicy style, garlic style... we are open to anything as long as it's awesome! Should be a banquet type place that would be good for a group of about 8. Any other suggestions of great dishes to get (esp. seafood) would be much appreciated.

THANK YOU!!

  1. Give CBS Seafood a try. Not as good as the best places in Monterey Park / Alhambra but certainly acceptable.

    1. Haven't tried it myself but last time I was there, J.R. Bistro had some table fliers offering lobster and crab in a couple of saucing options for $9.99.

      1. Steamed Dungeness crab with garlic and noodles at the Empress Pavilion. Say what you want about how the Empress has seen better days (wrong, in my view, but people do say so), this is one dynamite dish.

        1. I know that to many who read this I will sound like a broken record, but the best place to go IMHO is Hop Li on Alpine. They bring you the live lobster to show it to you before the take it and do whatever you want with it. Used to scare the heck out of my daughter when she was young. They may also have the best fried rice in Chinatown. They are on Alpine St.

On request, every Chinese restaurant will allow you to inspect the fresh seafood before it's cooked. [shrug]

At Hop Li you don't have to request they just bring it. They used to do the same at Ocean Star but I haven't been there in a long time.

Maybe that's where Arnie Morton's got their whole "bring out everything but the Chef" to your table to show you... (g)

          2. Go to Mayflower. Their lobster with garlic is what you'll see everybody eating. Open real late too.
