Is there a great breakfast place on the upper west side open 5:30-6:00 am on a Friday?

Does anyone know how early Fairway's Cafe opens? I do my shopping at about 7 am and they are open by then (I see people there). Maybe that would work as well???

      Their menu says 8am, unfortunately.

Oh that's too bad. I wonder if the people I see there at 7 are worker/set-up people. I guess so.

Are you looking for a sit-down place? If so, add Viand Cafe to your list of options. It's about the same quality as French Roast (good, not great) and a bit more up-market than Big Nick's. Big Nick's has the advantage of massive portions, though, and delicious, junky (I think it's deep fried) challah French toast.

If you just want to pick something up quickly, grab a bagel and juice at H&H.

      H&H Bagels
2239 Broadway, New York, NY 10024

I had no idea Viand Cafe is open 24 hours. I've passed by late at night and could've sworn that all the lights were off. It is the better option than Big Nick's, I think. The latter has omelettes that are kind of flat and institutional --- the kind I got in my college dorm.

I haven't tried it, but based on the menu I would suggest French Roast at Broadway and 85th. It's open 24 hours and seems to have an attractive breakfast menu.

once was enough at french roast. awful service (granted it was sunday am) and pancakes that resembled and tasted like dishrags. avoid. otherwise go w/cimui's picks. viand is a generic old school greek diner as is pier 72 on WEA & 72. believe it's open early and the buckwheat pancakes (an obsession of mine) are better than they have any right to be in such a dump.

This may be difficult. Your best bet is probably a 24/7 diner. Big Nick's is decent.
