Nickel Diner ?'s....
We're planning to take the metrolink to see Cirque Berserk this weekend.
We're thinking that after the show, we'd take the metrolink back to Pershing Square and walk to the ND from there. Is the neighborhood safe enough at about 9:00pm or so? I read posts where people had to park blocks away, so I figure this would be about the same (it's 1/3 mile from the station to the restaurant according to Google maps).
Also, is that alledgedly miraculous bacon donut available as a dessert at dinner?
Don't know about the bacon doughnut, but I personally wouldn't worry about the walk. It's a neighborhood in transition, so there's some some skid-roadies, but, at least in my view, nothing likely to be genuinely dangerous.

I went there for dinner just for the bacon doughnut...they were out :( I loved the mac and cheese. Although I didn't try it, you guys have to get the smores cake. It gets torched tableside...nice presentation and the wait staff seem to love torching it.
For others who will be driving to downtown for the diner, there is a lot for parking on the same block...closer to 6th St. Another reminder that most streets downtown are one way.
The bacon doughnut is good. Rather interesting how the flavor of bacon is actually supressed when you think it would be dominant. I would love to try their other sweeties as well.
As for walking around there, I would not recommend it. Go one more block east and you are on the edge of Skid Row. I know the neighborhood is coming around, but it's not quite there for me to walk around yet. I would rather play it safe than sorry. And I am not the type of person to be over cautious. I live in Hollywood and walk around at night by myself with no worries. Many people would not do that. My walk to Nickel dinner in the daytime was a bit worriesome -- confronting several gaggles of people I might not want to have to confront alone. And that was uring the day. It's completely up to you if you want to take the risk. But if it were me, I would not walk around there at night unless I was parked right out front and walking directly to the door. Just one person's opinion.
ooooh - have fun. i love the fifth and main (without eggs) -- it's a breakfast item, but they serve it at lunch (so maybe also at dinner?). my guess is that the bacon donut is available 24/7.
as for the walk - i wouldn't sweat it since you're with someone. just walk directly down 5th until you get to main and hang a right. going that route, you really shouldn't experience anything remotely shockworthy. if you wander around a lot - you will see some stuff, but this area is 10000x better than years past. stick to 5th and you'll be fine.
