Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Any inexpensive breakfast on Upper East Side?

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are going to be in NYC for 3 days and we are staying at the Upper East Side Marriott at 92nd and 1st. We both like to start off the day with a good but inexpensive breakfast, and since we're trying to jam a lot into our visit, we were hoping to find some places within walking distance so we can eat before we get going.

Alternatively, one of the days we are "touristing" at the UN as our first stop of the day, so if anyone is aware of a great breakfast near there, that would also be helpful!

    1. If you are looking for a bagel spot on your way to the UN, go to Tal's on 1st Avenue between 54th and 53rd.
      Near your hotel
      Sarabeth's
      Madison btwn 92nd and 93rd

        1. Hi - I live quite close by. About how much do you want to spend, and do you want a hot breakfast or coffee/muffins/pastries?

I think we'd like to keep it to $10 or less per person if possible, but if there's a place you highly recommend, maybe up to $15?

It would be good to hear about both hot breakfast and pastries, but the one MUST is a good cup of coffee!!

Sarabeth has a little area in the front - I like their coffee much better than that at Yura, which is on the corner of 92nd & Madison. The pain du matin there is excellent, and I quite like their scones and croissants too. I'm drawing a blank now at hot breakfasts, as I don't usually eat those out. There's also a place called the Corner Bakery at Third and 92nd that always seems busy, but I haven't been yet.

I think the poster's pricing guidelines disqualify Sarabeth's. Sarabeth's is pretty pricey.

If you have coffee and a pastry/scone/etc. in the front, it's under five dollars.

                    2. Are you looking for a good breakfast in the sense of eggs, pancakes, and like that? Jackson Hole, Madison at 91st, provides that kind of breakfast. I haven't been there in years, but it always provided decent chow at plausible prices, and I doubt that the story has changed that much.

Or, are you looking for good in the sense of a really tasty almond croissant, a creamy, foamy latte, and like that? Macchiato Espresso Bar is between Grand Central and the UN, so maybe, if that's what you're looking for, that could work for you.

                        1. 3 Decker on 2nd and 91 St. It's a coffee shop but it has great breakfasts and is cheap. Fast service too.

                            1. To me there is nothing like a good diner for breakfast. I like the Mansion Diner on York and 86th

                                1. Around the corner on 91st St. between York and 1st is Eli's Vinegar Factory. (An expensive
food store.) On the ground floor there is a small cafe where you can have coffee and pastry.
On Sat. and Sun. there is a restaurant on the 2nd Fl. that serves a delicious brunch. It's very "rustic" looking.... but the prices certainly aren't -:) There's also a diner-like place on the corner of 91st and York called Timmys something or other. They have tables outside, but I've never eaten there so can't comment on the food. Also, on that block you can get some convenient buses. M31 goes down York to E 57 and then West to 12th Avenue. M86 goes down to E 86 than West thru Central Park to Broadway.

                                    1. Willy's-2nd and 80th

                                        1. there is a TAL Bagels on E. 86th Street, between First and Second Ave.

                                            1. for a bigger breakfast, there is also the Barking Dog on 94th/3rd. Has good eggs/omlettes/waffles, etc. Also Pain Quotidien on 85th/madison if you are headed that way.

                                                1. re: preppie foodie

If the Barking Dog on 94th is the same owners as the Barking Dog on 74th and York then I'd go there. The food is awesome (and the coffee's great).

                                                  • I wouldn't call the food spectacular, but there is a very inexpensive diner on the east side of 2nd ave just south of where your staying. I have been there many times and it always does the trick. I can't remember the name of the place but you can't miss it

                                                      1. re: kbrower

Do you mean 3 Decker? It's on the southeast corner of 2nd Ave & 91st St.

                                                        • Walk down 1st Ave to 83 Street and try Peter's on the east side of the avenue. It's comparable to diner prices and they seem to do a good job cooking eggs - something that can't be said for 99% of the diners in NYC. Also, the coffee is good.

                                                            1. Thanks everyone! We leave today and are excited to try as many of your suggestions as possible!

                                                                1. re: c.cow

By the way - I don't know if you are planning to have dinner near your hotel, but there are a couple of places I like just a block or two away - Zebu Grill for Brazilian and Kurio for sort of eclectic food and great cocktails. Wouldn't call either a "destination" place, but if you end up wanting to grab a bite near your hotel, these places might work for you.
