Sarno's Rum Cake

For many years, my birthday cake of choice was a rum cake from Sarno's. I think they called it a Chocolate Rum Torte or maybe a French Chocolate Rum Torte. For me, the frosting was key. It was very dense. Maybe a ganache. Does anyone in the LA area currently make something comparable? My birthday is coming up. Thanks for your help.

    1. Try Eagle Rock Italian Bakery & Deli, Claros in San Gabriel (I think they get there stuff from Federicos Bakeries), or maybedo a Yelp serac for Italian Bakeries.I MISS Sarnos very much. I still see the daughter in the neighborhood at her place Mama Mia Cafe on Vermont, right across from the old Sarnos. Oh how I miss the cannolis. Ciao

Man, you read my mind -- I was going to suggest stopping in at Mamma Mia and seeing if she had any suggestions.

GREAT rum cake at Portos in Glendale, no icing.

I think the icining is important in the Italian rum cake. I can not tell you how many rum cakes, cannoli, cassata cakes, strawberry tarts, eclairs, napolians & loaves of bread I ate from Sarno's. God Bless them!
