Highlands, NC - good food but budget friendly?
I'll be in Highlands over the weekend and am looking for a few good casual and budget friendly places to eat. I don't mind paying for good food, but am not planning to go the fine dining route this time.
This is no help since I don't remember the name....but there's a GREAT family friendly BBQ joint in Highlands. Alton Brown stopped by on one of his cross-country tours a couple years ago.
EDIT: I Just remembered...it's "Carolina Smokehouse" and it's just down the road (take 64 East) in Cashiers, NC.
I would definitely suggest going down the mountain to Dillard House in Dillard, GA. It is true southern style food. As you can see from the pics, they bring everything to your table - everything that is on the menu that day. It is not a communal table like some. These pics were taken on our table for 2! The fried chicken is excellent, as is the butternut squash casserole.
Another plus is that there are several overlook spots on the way from Highlands where you can stop and enjoy the scenery. It is about a 15 mile drive - should take you less than a half hour.
Thanks for the recs, Maestrette. I'll actually be in the area attending a workshop so I won't be doing much sightseeing. I live in Asheville anyway, so sightseeing in the area isn't high on my agenda this time. I will, however, drive slowly and look around a lot on my way to and from.
However, Carolina Smokehouse is in Cashiers, not Highlands. I tried it post Alton and found it to be mediocre at best. There are a couple of sandwich places in Highlands that are OK, nothing special. There is a new deli cum bistro in a big white house on the left side of the road to Cashiers that isn't too bad--I don't recall the name. I think it is still open, but am not sure. No offense to maestrette, but IMO other than the pig out aspect Dillard House isn't worth a chowhound even pulling off the road if you happen to be driving by. There is a simple Mexican place in Clayton Ga called la Jerezana that is excellent. Henry's in Clayton is also very good, especially the chicken, perhaps the best Southern style buffet around, and cheap, but ony open for lunch Tues-Fri and Sun. In Highlands itself pickin's are slim. In Frankiln there is a fairly new place called Yati's Bistro that is pretty good, but only open Th-Sun.
