First Timer Reviews

I just spent 4 days in New Orleans with my fiance. First I have to say Hotel Monteleone is a great place to stay. I could be a tough critic but I was impressed. Here is where we dined:

I have to say the place exceeded my already high expectations

Commander’s Palace Bloody Mary (A) Best ever
Mimosa (A-)
Pork Shoulder Gumbo (A+) Please note that I have never been a particular fan of Gumbo but this is one of the best things I've ever tasted - smoky flavor perfectly seasoned
Quail stuffed with cornbread in coffee sauce (A+) Fantastic Flavors with a perfectly cooked game
Tomato Salad (B) Beautiful presentation but girlfriend commented on the lack of cheese. She thought it was good noytgreat
New Orleans Barbecued Shrimp (B+) Great tasting, perfectly cooked shrimp. I am usually the tough critic but my fiance was harder on this dish - I can't quite tell why since the shrimp and grits it was served on were delicious.
Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé (A) - Wow
Service (A-)

The restaurant my fiance absolutely LOVED was...

Seared Scallops with Ratatouille and Lemon Basil Aioli (A) fantastic
Veal Sweetbreads with Sherry Mustard Butter (A) Near perfect
Triple Tail Muscles, Chorizo and Crouton (A)
Grilled Duck Breast with Pepper Jelly Sauce and Wild Rice (B) A bit stringy and I don’t like bell peppers
Service (A-)

Crawfish Etouffe (B+)
Louisiana Raw Oysters (B+, A-, A-) sitting at the oyster bar the last 2 visits the oysters were a bit more chilled. These were very good oysters. Perfectly sized - I hate too large or too small and fresh taste
Shrimp PoBoy (B)
Service (B+)
** I went to try Felix Oysters but the turnover of oysters seemed much less frequent and it was pretty empty - so I walked out and went back to ACME

Beignets (A-)
Cafe Au Lait Iced Coffe (A)
Service (B+)

Roast Beef Po Boy (A-)
Crawfish Etouffe (A-)
Service (B+)

Soft Shell Crabs with Corn Grits (A-) One of the best soft shell crabs I have had in a long time
Shrimp Cow Chow (C+) girlfriend really hated this dish
Pork Cheeks (B) I didn't quite get this dish as the pork cheeks were fried)
Green Tomato and Crawfish Casserole (B+)
Service (A-)

  1. congrats on a great feed. just don't get any bloodwork done in a while, you need to level off after such a rich trip. come back when you're a quart low. cheers!

    1. Thank you for your reviews. Been to some fairly recently, and others in the distant past. Almost like "going home."

      1. Lots of great options for those who may be dining at these places. CP and Bayona are two of my favorites and I love to hear when others enjoy the same places. The sweetbreads at Bayona are delectable. Hurry back soon!

Excellent Chow Hound dining report. I also have enjoy CP Sunday Jazz bunch, you have try the jazz bunch next time you are in NOLA. For fresh PJ oysters, always Acme Oyster house. I just spent four days in NOLA and I am ready to go back for a bloody mary at CP.
          Thank you

        2. Excellent review. Your descriptions of the meals made my mouth water. You must have had an excellent teacher!!

          1. I'm glad someone had a good experience @ Mother's. I love mother's. Some here have really knocked it recently. It's just basically a deli by definition I guess, but some expect Commander's.

No, we don't expect Commander's...Mother's is what it is, a horrible, horrible tourist trap.

              1. re: mortalcoil

I agree mortalcoil!! I just want to rescue people from those long lines when I see them all lined up outside!

              2. re: NOLAJOE

yeah -1 on Mother's....the roast beef "debris" is a watery bland mess devoid of anything resembling flavor. and thats their flagship/legacy item!

i mean, no offense, but there are just way too many better places to get a damn fine poboy. Parasol's, Parkway, Johnny's, etc.. heck -- P&G is only a few block away, same deli style ordering line, better roast beef.

I agree about the debris. You described it perfectly.
