Bakersfield...Whole foods-type? Asian markets?

I just moved here from Manhattan and can't seem to find some stuff I'm used to. Any store like whole foods? Any places that sell things like roasted peppers and babaganoush?...

Are there Asian markets? I'm hoping to buy things like dumplings and other cold stuff that I can't lug in from 99 when I go to Van Nuy. BTW I tried the asian market in little Saiga plaza but the food is mostly Vietnameese and not Chinese/Japanese.

  1. Closest Whole Foods would be either Fresno or maybe Santa Clarita. Roasted peppers I see in all the stores, maybe check World Market and Luigi's I usually make my own Babaganoush, there's a Mediterranean market in the Northeast corner of Ashe and White Lane. There's also a Oriental Market on White Lane between Gosford and Ashe on the South side of the street, I forget the name.
What brings you to Bakersfeild all the way the other coast, if I may ask?

Thanks. I will go down the list. BTW, we tried the Magat's Asian market yesterday and it doesn't exist. I think it's Dollar Tree now. We live on the NE so we will venture to the more western markets listed there probably on another weekend (this weekend, going to San

I looked on their website and it seems they are a market. Like Boston

          1. Oh your poor thing. Yes Trader Joe (a California institution, commonly called TJ's) is your best bet. Or drive over the "grapevine" into Los Angeles.

The Gourmet Store (I think that's the name) next door to Cafe Med would have the ingredients to make baba ganoush (or hummus). They may even have some already prepared. I don't have an exact address but it is behind The Outback Restaurant on Stockdale Highway.
