MaGerks in Ft Washington FYI

This is the place that bought the Bent Elbo. I saw they had a temp hiring sign out so I e-mailed them and they say they plan a September 15th opening if anyone was interested.

  1. I drove by and saw the sign, too. It seems that The Bent Elbo has been out of there for a few years, not so?

I was trying to think of the name before it was The Bent Elbo. Was it The Fort Side Inn from decades ago? And then there was another establishment there for a while. Any Hounds remember its history of incarnations?

It was the Fort Side Inn from the early 1900's. I think the Bent Elbo was established in the late 1970's but I don't know if it was something else between.

The Bent Elbo must have been established prior to 1978 or so as I lived in Plymouth Meeting from 1978-1980 and remember seeing the Bent Elbo sign around that time frame. I was only 6, but still remember seeing it on my way to church in Ft. Washington.

Ah HAH! I remembered the one between Ft. Side Inn and The Bent Elbow. Back in the '70s, there was a short-lived watering hole called Mushrooms. After they folded, I remember the renovations for Elbo took a while.

    2. Thanks for the update, I'm intrigued. Do you know if they plan for it to be a big bar like the Elbo was, or if they are going to spiff up the place a bit?

      1. Here's a link to their menu. Sure hope that's not a cheese steak in the upper left!

i was thinking that it was a roast pork sandwiches but I don't see roast pork anywhere on the mernu, yikes!

Also, isn't their signature MaGerk's sandwich pretty much the same as the Schmitter (not suire I spelled that right)?

          1. re: AmblerGirl

They're stealing the Schmitter and flaunting Ravens/Orioles/Terrapins love. That's going to endear them to Eagles fans

            1. re: coolgeek

I doubt they'll be doing anything but flaunting Eagles/Phillies/Flyers/Sixers/ Big Five, etc. in this area. Stealing the Schmitter? Is that really possible?

              1. re: bucksguy14

lol! Is that ok to say on Chowhound?

Not to be picky but they really need somebody to spell check their menu. Sorry, huge pet peeve.

          2. I was under the impression that The Bent Elbow was primarily a 'watering hole' that served food on the side. Is it safe to assume that MaGerk's will be the same? Drinking places can serve decent food, but that kind of place often lacks the atmosphere that I prefer. For instance, Union Jack's is supposed to have some great eats but I can't picture myself going there because it's primarily a boozing kinda place? Right or wrong?
