The Great Indian Food Journey [from UK/Ireland board]

Dear All,

This September I will be embarking on a journey across India using a rather unlikely mode of transport- The Autorickshaw. My journey starts in Goa and ends in Nepal. I will be passing through the following states- Goa, Maharashtra,Gujrat,Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and will include halts at all the major great indian 'food cities', apart from Kolkata. I will be passing through Bombay, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi, Lukhnow and Benares.

The main intention, apart from seeing the country and staying alive on the dangerous highways, will be to sample the food of every region I will be passing through.

I'm from India, but I haven't even gotten around to seeing half the country in my 26 years of existence. Besides i've spent the last 5 years in London, so I feel like i'm a bit out of touch. So while I do know a few things about what to do and where to go in order to sample the best, there is a lot I do not know.

Hence I am posting this well in advance, so that I can draw up a list from all your recommendations. I'm posting this on the U.K site as I feel confident that a lot of you have been to places I haven't and i'm sure there will be some gems on the list!

I hope there wil be a fair few replies!

Regards

Pranav Ullal

    1. Pranav,

About a year ago, I received a long newsletter from a well-known American food writer. He had gone to India for a similar experience to yours. I don't think he travelle, however, in the same way.

If you send me your email address, I'll be happy to send the file or I can print it out and snail mail it if that's preferable.

This person travelled with a savvy, Indian chef named Prasad Chirnomula, who at that time worked in Connecticut.

Prasad's restaurant in in New Canaan CT - Called Thali; one of the better indian restaurants in the region.

You have to try Hotel Venite, 31 January Road, River Front Secretariat, (near Mermaid Garden and GPO), in Panjim, Goa.
I was last there in 2001, though. If it remains the same, then all their traditional Goan fish/seafood dishes are great.
