Misbehaving Wine Cooler

In 2004, when the home equity money was flowing like, um, wine, I spent about $1200 and installed a U-Line Wine Captain as part of my kitchen remodel. It didn't run right at first -- it kept the temperature but it clicked on and off constantly (every 10 minutes). It's only about 3 cubic feet, stays at 55 degrees, and gets opened less than once a week, so I couldn't understand why it was running all the time. All the gaskets were sealing. While it was under warranty I had two different repair companies out: a local one that replaced the thermostat, which did not change the situation. I was told, "Hey, that's just how these things work." I called another repair service 150 miles away in the big city (Los Angeles) and since it was under warranty, they came out and made repairs and it ran fine for 5 years.

Last month, the thermostat went out. The local company was recommended by U-Line as they had recently completed training for U-Line machines. The local guy replaced the thermostat and now it's clicking on every 10 minutes. "That's just how these things run, " he says. U-Line reps have given two different stories: "it shouldn't run all the time" or "that's just how these things run." The big city repair service won't come all this way on a non-warranty repair. Nobody can explain why it ran infrequently and quietly for five years but doesn't now. It's driving me nuts clicking on and off 24/7. Does anybody have an insight what the problem might be? Magic words I can say to refrigeration repairmen?

Since it didn't click when it was new or repaired the first time I would not accept a fix that resulted in a clicking sound every 10 minutes. It's not just how these things run. U-LIne is not a cheap product. I hope you get this resolved.

have you tried calling the place that repaired it originally to ask what was done? Perhaps they'll have some insight into what might be the fix, since it seems like it just requires the same fix again. If so once you get what that would be just give the local place a call and tell them you want whatever it is that the out of town place suggested. Best of luck to you.
