Visiting our son this coming weekend and staying in Alexandria. Looking for cool, hip restaurants with energy and, of course, great food.

hi, pam, i recently had amazing sushi at Flying Fish in Old Town. Also Restaurant Eve has a fabulous reputation, but I havent been there. -- catherine

The Majestic is our go-to place in Old town if Eve is booked. Both places have style and serve excellent drinks.

For a casual lunch I like Eammon's Fish and chipper.

I really like the Del Ray area for cool, hip but casual. It is a little way from downtown though. I really like Evening Star Cafe, Taqueria Poblano, Cheestique and there are some other cool places there.

There are a number of great places in Alexandria. In addition to the places already mentioned, I'd also suggest:

          Brabo Tasting Room
          A la Lucia

They're all in Old Town, though A la Lucia and Bastille are north of King Street and a little off the main tourist stretch.

I would strike A la Lucia. I tried the place for the first time last thursday. Every course was awful. Even the house salad was awful. The dressing was no more than a sprinkling of balsamic vinegar (I think that's what it was supposed to be). Even the lettuce had an off flavor. We didnt gamble with ordering dessert. As we got our check, we overheard another couple telling the owner/manager that the food was completely unedible. Maybe it was an off night for them.

We went in the fall and were completely unimpressed. Service lacking, front of the house (who I think was the owner/manager) was also rude. I never quite understood all the accolades it gets.

Well that's distressing news. I haven't been in several months, but I always thought it was a quite good neighborhood italian. And I love the wine bar they have. I hope it was an off night and not a sign of a serious downhill slide.

              Pam --

Check out Farrah Olivia by Morou, it's really great. A mix of African/Mediterranean and some classic American fare. Slightly different flavors than your typical new age upscale restaurant. Very cool interior as well.

I've heard great things about Vermillion and Restaurant Eve, although I think Eve is much pricier.

My husband and I go to Vermilion for special occasions and we love it. We have gone to Flying Fish and had awful service, but the food was good.
