  1. It is too late for a trip over there - The article states that Lawton's is closed until the problems can be remedied. Since everyone is pointing fingers at everyone else and no one is taking responsibility for the problems, you can bet that Lawton's at that location is done. A shame.

      crap!
it's what i get for skimming the article.

    2. Darn, this stinks. I hope they can somehow fix things, but it doesn't sound good at all. Looks like about the only place for rippers north of Boston now is at the Lobster Claw in North Reading.

      1. Further up north, Lena's in Salisbury grills a pretty good hotdog.

          1. I've only been there once, maybe 3 years ago. I'd heard so much about the rippers, and the onions (the words "fried onions" = Pavlov's bell for me!). But the franks were bathed in oil not hot enough to achieve the Maillard metamorphosis, and the onions were pale and soggy, dripping in the oil they'd been simmering in. All this on a Wonder-bready roll - no repeat visits for me, sidewalk or no.

Darn. Well, better late than never, I guess. Thanks for the update.

Maybe a 'chow get together' for their re-opening may be in order.

                  1. re: treb

Not too many people, though. We don't want the place to be sliding back into the canal! :-b

Excellent, keep us posted on the re-opening date.

Drove by yesterday, doesn't look like anything is happening, also signs on the marque are down.

                            1. re: treb

Drove by this morning, crews with jack hammers pounding the sidewalk, maybe there's hope before year-end.

                    1. re: ScubaSteve

What a bunch of scum bags, hope they catch them, maybe you can deal them some pay back.

Inexcusable but not inexplicable: the TV news said a few days ago that unemployment in Lawrence is 18% - crimes like this increase when jobs are scarce.

                      2. Good news, Lawton's is OPEN. How about some of us CHer's meeting this Saturday the 19th at noon to show them some CH and Holiday love.

Yeah, at least a couple of people have told me that they reopened recently. Great news!

I'd meet up with all of you, but I'll be hiking most of the day. Have fun if you go!

Wow, that's so sad. Thanks for the update, Steve. My parents in Methuen don't think to send me the important stories from the trib.

Sad, hate to see a chow landmark go under, the road and bridge work has been a crippler for the area. Wonder if it'll ever re-open at that loc.
