Nha Trang, EdenCenter - report

Nha Trang in Eden Center looks like it is under new management maybe - it has been split up into two sections, one non-smoking. Not that I ever see many customers in there.

I had a sensational bowl of rice noodle soup. I selected the one that features shrimp paste made into the shape of 'worms.' The broth was tinged pink and delicious. For about $9, this was one heckuva meal, served with a generous mound of fresh herbs to tear into the soup. Even after I was full, I couldn't stop eating this until almost the very end.

I finally got around to trying this place. I followed your recs for the first round, but there is a lot on the menu to explore. Great food. Do you have any idea what that fermented, sour chili paste was? The waitress told me they made it, but didn't have a name for it. Next time I will ask the owner-looking woman.

Sorry, I'm not sure what it is. Other highlights are the #10 (I think) appetizer which is several summer rolls with ground pork plus a crispy wonton served with a very nice orange dipping sauce, ther version of shaky beef, and the roast quail.

I was there last week and had a bowl of Bun Bo Hue. I like this soup and have had many versions of it around town, one of the best of which was at Kim Ngan, which closed sometime last year. The description on the menu indicated that the soup included beef, pig's foot, and pig's blood. I seldom see pig's foot included in this dish so I was eager to try it. Anyway, the broth was not the least bit spicy, although you could see a lot of red bits floating around in the soup. I thought this place maybe wanted you to 'spice your own', so I threw in some of the chili pastes on the table. As I started eating, I noticed that they were quite generous with the pig foot and there were a lot of pig blood cubes too. I didn't see any beef slices, however. I did see one small piece of something that could have been oxtail, but the texture of the meat was more like pork than beef, so I don't know.

It was the strangest version of Bun Bo Hue I have ever seen. Maybe next time, if there is a next time, I will try the wormy soup.

Sounds like they are being 'creative' with their bun bo hue. I guess I'll have to give it a pass. At least they didn't skimp on the pig's foot! Lots more here to explore.

the bun rieu at Present (aka Fragrant Rive Vermicelli) is my favorite noodle soup right now, with bits of blood (which I don't eat because it's very irony and not particularly tasty), some tomatoes and a very hearty slightly spicy broth. It makes tjhe floating market noodle soup at Nava, Thai Sq and Sakultai seem wimpy and watered down in comparison.

I like the soup but it's not really hot (definitely not as hot as floating market noodle soup) but because of its intense flavor.

Hot and sour? Spicy and sour? Hot and spicy? It may contain iron.
