We are blessed with having an old-fashioned, three-screen drive-in theater in our area and are planning to go next weekend, if weather permits. Any suggestions for a picnic that we can take with us and eat in the car as we watch the movies? I'm looking for things that are easy and delicious and am avoiding anything that requires a table, knife, and fork or that is messy. In the past, deviled eggs, sandwich wraps, cubed cheese, and chocolate-dipped strawberries have worked well, but I'm looking for something a little different.

Are you going to watch all three movies? If so, you'll need more than a picnic! Seriously, any of the recent threads on the Home Cooking board for brunch in the park and bbq side dishes and pot lucks should give you plenty of ideas. Ina Garten is always packing some wonderful thing or other in Chinese take-out containers for the beach or as an outside snack. Just substitute your plastic Glad or Ziplock containers. Take home, pop in the dishwasher. I hope you reconsider the fork issue because there are so many cold or room temp dishes that would be perfect.

That said, how about individual muffaletta sandwiches, cold vichyssoise in a thermos, fruit chunks and grapes, individual containers of tortilla chips and guacamole or crackers and an herbed cheese like Alouette or torn pita and hummus, cookies and milk, sweet-spicy nut brittle, personal bags of trail mix or glorified Chex mix.

Take a tip from one of the road trip treads that ran recently -- put a large hand towel on your lap to catch crumbs, shake out the window and reuse for the next snack. You could also take a Tupperware container with wet washcloths to refresh between courses!

You don't mention if kids are in the equation. Enjoy your drive-in. It's a dying bit of Americana.
