Best Burger in the SFV?

l
lisapremiere Jun 13, 2009 12:53 PM

I tried to do a search, but can't find anything specific to the valley.

So - what is the best burger in the Valley?

Thanks!

My vote would probably go to Boneyard Bistro for their Southwest Patty Melt, wagyu beef on toasted rye with gruyere & cheddar cheeses, sautéed Onions, Anaheim chilies and bacon with three dipping sauces. These are first class burgers, although a bit pricey (is wagyu beef really necessary for a patty melt?)

Second choice would be the new branch of the Counter in Studio City, followed by one of the few remaining Hamburger Hamlets, in Sherman Oaks.

A "bit pricey" for that Southwest Patty Melt is $20.

Some of us might omit that "bit."

Oh, but it's SO good ... worth trying at least once ...

That being said, Andrew's North Hollywood Diner (fka Sitton's) uses American cheese. No bacon, the only dipping sauce is Heinz, and I could be wrong but I suspect the beef isn't Wagyu.

          $7.95.

The Laurel Tavern on Ventura is great- their bbq sauce is very close to Apple Pan's hickory burger.
        Very close

I've been to Laurel Tavern only a few times and while I have some gripes regarding their beer selection, I did enjoy the burgers, 'OLD SCHOOL BURGER - 8, HICKORY BURGER - 9, LAUREL BURGER - 9' and those pork popsicles, oops they were 'PORK BELLY SKEWERS - 6'!
Regarding their beer list, I love some California brews but they need more styles of Cal beer and maybe some of the best stuff from other areas!

Okay i'll recommend the low rent places! ;)

BILLS (in Van NUys) is your basic tiny burger stand - they don't even serve fries (just chips) and they are cash only
          and I don't think they're open very late (4p?)
          14742 Oxnard St
          Van Nuys, CA

Another tiny spot (in Sherman Oaks) is BILLYS
I always get the Buffalo burger here. Mmmmm. (They also have lamb, veggie, venison,Ahi and ostrich burgers!)
It's at the intersection of Magnolia and Van Nuys in Sherman Oaks.

A step up from the burger shacks, a in a strip mall:
Pineapple Hill Saloon (also a bar), also in Sherman Oaks
it's a little dirty but the burger is good! and stiff drinks!
          Van Nuys Blvd and Moorpark

Further out in the SFV is Daglas Drive In, which i'll be honest, is really a place t go to for the French Fries (thugh "everyday is fry day" they're not as good as they profess them to be!)
Winnetka Ave. and Van Owen St. in Winnetka
You may need Crestor after you eat the pastrami burger!

eat a Bullet burger at ZIGS in Reseda
(it's like a cheese burger and chillies on a french roll)
White Oak Ave and Van Owen St

and last but not least BEEPS!! (Sherman Way and Woodley Ave in Van Nuys)
if just for the kitsch! (very 50s!)
a ton of different versions of french fries, hot dogs and burgers
i've had some awesome milk shakes here! and it's pretty cheap ($7-$9)
it's not Master Burger, but it's a solid burger.

          Now i;m hungry!

I always forget Pineapple Hill, my favorite bar burger next to FO.

            Worth some linkage ...

PS Google says Zig's on White Oak is closed.

One of my favorites is Boulevard Burger on Ventura in Woodland Hills. Across the street from Fatburger, and IMO so much better. They will cook rare if requested!

I will always love the Menage a Trois Burger at Moe's in Burbank (Bacon Chesseburger with avocado). You also get the burger bar and option to order some pretty damn good fries.

Another very good burger is Pinot Bistro. I think they only serve it at lunch, but it was cooked perfectly (I asked for rare) and was excellent, juicy meat. On Ventura Boulevard near Coldwater Canyon.

Max in Sherman Oaks on Ventura Blvd. makes a great hamburger even if it is a bit pricey ($18). Otherwise, I also am a great fan of Pineapple Hill. Pineapple Hill makes what they call a Kona Burger with cheese, bacon and grilled onions. I waive off the grilled onions and ask for mine raw. Great bar mediocre wine but i guess good enough to go with the Kona Burger.

I like Hook Burger. The meat is lean and not overcooked. The buns are baked fresh every day and toasted to perfection. As much as I like the meat, I actually get the ahi tuna sandwich more now. I've never seen anything like it in a burger joint. The salads are probably their weakest point, but at least they have them. Any place I can get a glass of wine instead of an iced tea makes me happy :)

Someone just started a thread about the burgers at Fab Hot Dogs and i agree, they are superb. Juicy, flavorful and messy.

This is not a popular hound opinion, but the Sizzler on Sherman Way in Reseda makes a damn fine burger. Juicy, juicy, juicy. Great tasting meat.

                          The Sizzler...interesting!

And you couldn't pay me to eat at Fab. What a hot mess.

                          Two recs:

#1 Morton's in Burbank, burger at lunch only...and hard to improve upon perfection.
