Bonterra - Calgary

Why have I never been to this place before!? I had a fabulous dinner last night. (Sadly the thunderstorms wiped out any chance of dining on their stunning patio)... I see mixed reviews in the past on Chowhound, so just thought I'd update that they have a menu that's been revamped in the last few weeks.

There were four of us and fortuitously we all ordered something different. I love nights like that!

Apps:
Beef carpaccio - huge, and yum with horseradish mustard, fried capers
Calamari - light curry sauce, almost pesto consistency
Tuscan chicken livers - total winner of the table, concentrated flavour served in a large ramekin - no way one person could finish it but an excellent sharing starter
Terrine (of lamb, pork) from day's specials - also very good, with roasted garlic, brassica mustard

Mains:
Venison steak, truffle polenta, asparagus (day's special) - just fab
Linguine carbonara - with wild boar bacon and egg - not that gross creamy sauce - this is my new favourite pasta dish in Calgary - and for only $16!
Braised lamb shank - well-cooked lamb, wasn't crazy about the pumpkin polenta
Bistecca - grilled prime top sirloin, gorgonzola cheese - the cherry sauce was a nice touch

Dessert:
Peach cobbler
Panna cotta -- run, run and get this!

Friendly service, extremely comfortable room - and the manager told us about when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie dined there.

I'm planning to blog about this soon with photos, but had such a great time, I wanted to tell someone!

Good to know they've stepped back up. Their reputation has been a bit middling for the last couple of years, which was a shame. Calgary is lucky to have so many great Italian style restaurants.
