Scarpetta - so disappointed

Hi all. I just wanted to tell you about the very disappointing experience I had last night at Scarpetta. Everything started very well. The appetizers we had were very good. Like many posts have stated, the polenta and truffles dish and the yellowtail crudo were delicious. My Dad seemed to enjoy the octopus as well. No qualms there whatsoever.

The problem began after our appetizers were cleared. We waited for 45 minutes for the entres to be served. It was really strange because, at such a high-end place, you'd think somebody would come over and mention that our food was on the way or apologize for the delay. But it seemed like our table was actually completely forgotten. Only after 45 minutes went by did I see a few servers begin to buzz nearby. And when the food finally arrived, the issue went completely unaddressed. My father actually had to say something like "we thought they went to Italy for our pasta" and the head waiter just laughed. NOTHING MORE. It was bizarre and disappointing to say the least.

I ordered the spaghetti. I made sure to have the appropriate expectations - after reading previous posts I knew it wouldn't be the moon and stars on a plate. I hoped that it would just be great pasta. Even with that mindset I thought it was really bad, even on a "normal" scale... it was shockingly bland and totally overcooked. It reminded me of a pasta dish you'd get at a random mainstream "Italian" place...The rest of the group was disappointed as well. The linguine with lobster was way too salty and the goat special was inedible. My mom did like the duck and foie pasta.

I have to say that I'm not hard to please when it comes to dessert. But the "Scarpetta Tirimisu" was the worst I've ever had. A sliver of chocolate with some marshmallow fluff and an icy espresso gelato does not do it. My husband's chocolate cake was very rich and delicious and my mom liked her cheese platter.

I guess I just had some bad luck last night. I know that restaurants have off nights and things happen behind the scenes that cause less than perfect results. But if you're going to charge as much as they do, I don't think you are entitled to send out that kind of food. As a local I will be going elsewhere for fancy Italian food.
